Field notes

Why this foundation exists

01

Agents need an execution environment, not just a prompt.

Giving a model access to tools does not resolve permissions, failed tasks, persistent context, worker isolation, human approvals, or the record of what happened. Those concerns become infrastructure as soon as an agent is allowed to act.

02

Make every action bounded and inspectable.

Karnelian brings identity, capability-based permissions, workers, memory, events, and auditing into a local-first orchestration layer. The aim is a programmable foundation where developers remain in control of execution.

System model

Architectural direction

01

Model

Produces reasoning and proposed actions.

02

Agent

Carries identity, task context, and intent.

03

Harness

Coordinates lifecycle, memory, tools, and events.

04

Permissions

Constrains which capabilities may be exercised.

05

Workers

Perform bounded work across supported runtimes.

06

Machine / services

Local resources and approved external systems.

Conceptual flow — not a complete literal map of the current implementation.

Engineering map

Capabilities under exploration

01

Rust orchestration

A systems-oriented foundation for coordinating agent execution.

02

Capability security

Explicit, scoped permissions for every action an agent takes.

03

Identity & context

A defined identity and execution context for each agent run.

04

Memory & persistence

Context designed to remain useful across tasks and sessions.

05

Multi-runtime workers

Extensible worker execution across different runtime boundaries.

06

Events & coordination

Event streaming and task coordination between system parts.

07

Auditable operations

A traceable record of what agents attempted and performed.

08

Local models

A path for integrating models hosted within user-controlled infrastructure.

Active Development

Karnelian is the lab's most developed public initiative. The CLI and Harness are active engineering areas; Karnelian OS remains a longer-term research roadmap rather than a released operating system.

  1. 01

    Harness foundation

Agent execution, security boundaries, workers, memory, and observable task lifecycles.

  2. 02

    Developer orchestration

Multi-repository workspace control and local environment coordination through KRNL CLI.

  3. 03

    Expanded coordination

Research into deeper coordination between agents, local models, and system services.
